よくある質問

When should I call 911 instead of a hotline?

Call 911 when someone is in immediate danger or needs urgent medical, fire, or police help, for example if a person is not breathing, will not wake up, is having a seizure, or is being threatened. A crisis line is better for emotional distress, thoughts of suicide, or a safety question that is not an immediate emergency.

Can I text 911 in Memphis?

Federal guidance says to call if you can and text if you cannot, because text to 911 is only available in some areas. If your text does not go through, you should get an automatic message saying so. Check with your carrier or the county before relying on text.

What does 988 do?

988 connects you to trained counselors for suicidal thoughts, emotional distress, or substance use concerns. You can call, text, or chat at any hour, and veterans can press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line.

Are these lines really free and private?

Each listing states its own cost and privacy terms. Most hotlines here are free and confidential, but reporting lines for child or vulnerable-adult abuse are designed to pass information to investigators, so ask what happens to your report before you give details.
